These communal burial grounds from the Neolithic period derive their curious name from the vivid imagination of the Sardinian people, who, observing the small spaces within the funeral chambers, thought that they were the abode of tiny mythical beings, known as “Janas”.
These are constructions of huge stones piled up without any type of cement, which have stood the test of time and still stand out majestically - overlooking the sea, on high mountain summits, on hills and in the plains.
Strange but true. In Sardinia there are Dolmen which are also found in northern Europe, the island variety smaller but no less fascinating. In Dorgali and Cala Gonone, there are several of the most characteristic Dolmen on the island, such as Motorra and Monte Longu:
According to a legend, beings with superhuman powers (giants) have erected the Giants’ Tombs. Along the country road from Dorgali to Lula – after the turning for Orosei – remains this very interesting and well preserved tomb of Sardinia’s prehistory. Here we can find a sepulchral room that has still got its original flat covering slab like many dolmens.
Tiscali is a nuraghic village hidden in the interior of a cave at the crest of the same-named mountain. It is indeed a real mystery that archaeologists, scholars and science haven’t unravelled yet.
